Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

Program Description

This degree builds on knowledge gained in the Associate of Science program by providing opportunities to further develop the skills associated with advanced career outcomes in the criminal justice profession. The program prepares students for employment opportunities in various criminal justice environments that require advanced writing, technical, and critical thinking skills. This program provides students with comprehensive academic knowledge of criminalistics, victimology, criminal investigations, and the criminal justice system as well as the skills and techniques used in these disciplines while emphasizing the importance of community relationships, ethics, and diversity. Some positions within the field may require additional education, training, or graduation from an academy.

(Some states, including but not limited to Minnesota, require additional certification, licensing, and/or training academy completion to be eligible for employment in a law enforcement capacity.)

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  1. Analyze the historical developments, theories, and key principles in the field of criminal justice.
  2. Analyze complex issues within the criminal justice field with an emphasis on ethical considerations.
  3. Evaluate the influence of cultural, social, and economic factors on the current justice system.
  4. Apply effective communication skills to convey complex criminal justice concepts to diverse audiences.

Program Content

A minimum of 120.00 semester credit hours is required for graduation.

Required Courses


All courses, 70.00 semester credit hours, are required.

Open Electives Courses


A minimum of 9.00 semester credit hours is required. Eligible students can take up to 9.00 credit hours of dual-credit graduate level coursework to complete a portion of the open electives requirement.

Required Capstone or Internship


3.00 semester credit hours are required.

Students enrolled in this bachelor’s degree must complete a minimum of 36.00 semester credit hours in general education distributed among the following disciplines. Refer to the General Education section of the catalog for specific information about courses within each discipline.
